W.S. Greenwell, a.k.a. Cujo, is a proud native of Louisville, Kentucky. He retired from a thirty-year sentence at a large shipping company. He also worked many years in IT and mechanical maintenance.
He has been a boxer and a bouncer. Greenwell merges his literary experience with his interesting, diverse background and dark humor to create unforgettable characters and believable dialogue.
A lifelong fan of fantasy RPGs and all things sword and sorcery, Greenwell embraces some fantasy traditions while upending other tropes associated with the genre.
Q: So, what inspired you to write this series?
A: “I have loved the sword and sorcery genre since I was a kid. I grew up on Conan and Lord of the Rings. I watched every ‘B’ movie I could find. I also used to play a lot of RPGs. So, what I wanted to do was have an epic adventure within a world that maintained the RPG classes of warriors, wizards, rogues, and clerics. But I wanted to add the grit of the real world.”
Q: Grit of the real world?
A: “The mentality of people in life and death situations. The desperation of the streets.”
Q: There are a lot of Fantasy books out there. What do you think sets your story or stories apart?
A: Well, I like to think I have really cool characters (laughs). I think my dialogue is realistic. One thing that has bothered me through the years in books and movies is I find myself thinking ‘That is not what someone in that situation would say or how they would act.’
Also, I think my explanation for the workings of magic on Terrarova is different.”
Q: How so?
A: “Well, mana, the source of magic, is actually a physical substance. That’s all I’m giving away. You’ll have to read the books.” (laughs).
Q: Okay. Well, what do you want your readers to take from your books?
A: “I just want them to have fun and enjoy the journey. Aspects of this story have been haunting me for many years. I just recently had the time to actually write it down and get it out of my head. Hopefully, people like me that love this genre will enjoy it. We shall see.”
